5 September 2026 · Historical model output for 2 June 2023
This sample tests access, file interpretation and extraction of the provincial regional weather data. It does not evaluate local weather skill or reconstruct a flare event. Findings and figure
The date and geographic envelope were declared before examining model performance. June 2 lies within the advertised 2019–2023 period and avoids a monthly boundary for possible later comparisons with the acquired road observations. No inversion, outflow or representative-season claim follows from this date.
All 24 UTC timestamps on June 2 are provided. The figure uses three evenly spaced hours, 00:00, 08:00 and 16:00 UTC, selected before reading the profile values. It displays native levels up to 1,200 m above model terrain. The tables retain all 40 levels. Lines between plotted points guide the eye; no interpolated levels were created.
| Reference location | Nearest native cell | Native centre | Approximate distance | Model terrain, m MSL |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Woodfibre site proxy | I28, J74 | 49.6676, −123.2537 | 263 m | 159 |
| Squamish Elementary air station | I34, J77 | 49.7058, −123.1448 | 475 m | 14 |
Selection used spherical great-circle distance across 1,800 acquired grid centres, without adjusting the choice to match terrain or weather. Printed coordinates and these approximate distances are not survey precision. Woodfibre's reference point is a published operations-control-tower position. The Elementary point comes from the retained provincial station inventory. Neither grid centre is the exact source or monitor location.
The B.C. WRF service returned a launcher package listing 18 monthly d06 tiles. Only the two complete tiles used here were downloaded; headers were inspected for the surrounding 16. The two originals total 296,525,508 bytes. Their versions, direct URLs, sizes and SHA-256 hashes are in the source manifest.
Native headers identify WRF_ARW 4.6.0, CALWRF 2.0.3 Level 190426, 3D.DAT 2.1, 1.333 km spacing and 40 levels. Each file contains 733 complete UTC timestamps from June 1 at 00:00 to July 1 at 12:00, inclusive. These are model states at the stated times, not measured hourly averages.
An original sequential reader checks all grid IDs, timestamps and 40-row vertical blocks. It does not assume a fixed number of bytes per hour: hydrometeor compression makes record lengths vary. The June 2 fragments are exact source-byte slices, selected as a half-open interval ending at June 3 at 00:00. They are not standalone CALMET inputs and have no rewritten model header. No bundled model executable was run.
Field interpretation uses CALPUFF Version 6 User Instructions, §7.7, Table 7-33, checked against the matching CALWRF 2.0.3 writer. The WRF-specific mapping matters: surface pressure is not sea-level pressure, surface downward longwave radiation is not outgoing radiation at the top of the atmosphere, and wind direction is in degrees. The original reader uses the separately documented field positions; it contains no copied model implementation.
The profile CSV contains 1,920 rows: two locations × 24 timestamps × 40 levels. The surface CSV contains 48 rows.
| Profile field | Interpretation |
|---|---|
timestamp_utc |
UTC model-state timestamp |
height_msl, native_terrain_m_msl |
Rounded model geopotential height and terrain height, metres above mean sea level |
height_above_model_terrain_m |
Difference of those two native heights; roughly 1 m uncertainty from their printed rounding alone |
temperature, temperature_c |
Native kelvin and its Celsius conversion, subtracting exactly 273.15 |
pressure |
Hectopascals |
wind_speed, vertical_velocity |
Metres per second; vertical velocity is positive upward |
wind_direction |
Wind-from direction clockwise from true north, already earth-oriented; no further rotation applied |
direction_defined |
False at zero speed, when a stored direction has no physical meaning |
relative_humidity |
Percent; subject to the converter's processing and clipping |
| Water-vapour and hydrometeor fields | Mixing ratios in g/kg |
hydrometeor_representation |
Distinguishes five explicit values from five values compressed to zero at written precision |
The short hydrometeor marker −5.000 is not a missing-value flag and does not prove physically exact zero. Negative vertical velocities remain valid signed data. Land-use codes are not decoded because the header's category count does not establish the input land-cover taxonomy.
Surface wind is at 10 m above model terrain and surface temperature at 2 m. Other surface fields retain the meanings and units in the bundled factual schema. None is a pollutant concentration or a person-level exposure estimate.
An independent scan matched all 1,466 hourly byte boundaries across the two files and both extracted fragments. A separate profile review matched the 48 surface and 1,920 vertical records directly to their original bytes, including heights, Celsius conversions, UTC, native wind values and hydrometeor decoding. The reproduction kit contains the original readers, factual schema, coordinate crosswalk, selected results and instructions. The two full provincial weather files are external inputs, available at the exact URLs and hashes in its manifest. Third-party software, manuals and executables are excluded.
Before using these fields for dispersion, evaluate native shoreline terrain and local winds, obtain the WRF configuration and evaluation records, and establish which observations entered its data assimilation. The profiles alone do not validate an inversion or establish independent predictive performance.
